Pair of Gilded Metal Wall Sconces with Wheat Sheaves Decor, Circa 1970

This elegant pair of wall sconces embodies the decorative refinement of the 1970s and their taste for naturalistic motifs inspired by the 18th century. Crafted in finely worked gilded metal, it stands out for its decoration of wheat sheaves tied with ribbons, a classical motif laden with symbolism: prosperity, abundance and the generosity of nature. The wheat sheaf motif enjoyed great success in French decoration during the 20th century, particularly under the impetus of the neoclassical creators of the 1940s–1970s. The great Parisian houses — Maison Jansen, Maison Baguès, Maison Charles — declined this motif in their creations of light fixtures, furniture and decorative objects, prolonging the decorative tradition inaugurated at the end of the Ancien Régime. The gilding of the metal, carefully executed, gives these sconces a warm luminosity that highlights the finesse of the sculptural modelling. The work of the ears, the foliage and the ribbon ties testifies to a demanding craftsmanship, inherited from the great Parisian bronziers. With their dimensions of 17.32 in wide, 9.84 in deep and 20.67 in high, these sconces will bring a touch of refinement to a living room, entrance or staircase. Pieces sourced by Maison Barrois, they will sublimate both classical and contemporary interiors. Good overall condition. Sold as a pair.
