Pair of Polished Brass 'Giraffe' Animal Sculptures, 1970s

This pair of sculptures is a characteristic creation of 1970s decorative arts. The set features two giraffes in complementary postures: the first stands on all four legs, while the second is depicted lying down with its limbs folded beneath its body. The execution relies on solid cast brass. The visual interest of these pieces lies in their surface treatment: the metal, intensely polished to catch the light, is traversed by a network of incised lines accurately imitating the animal's geometric (reticulated) coat. Anatomical details (ossicones, ears, snout) are finely highlighted. During the 1970s, high-end interior decoration experienced a major craze for the 'Safari chic' aesthetic, a branch of the Hollywood Regency movement. Italian and French decorators heavily integrated polished brass and figures of African wildlife to create eclectic, luxurious, and exotic interiors. Condition report: Very good overall condition. The brass displays a preserved shine, with minute traces of natural oxidation in the recesses of the chasing, accentuating the relief of the pattern.
