Set of Four Polychrome 'Moretti' Torchiere Sculptures, Venetian Style, Mid-20th Century

This exceptional set brings together four full-length sculpted figures resting on stepped octagonal bases. They depict 'Moretti' (Moorish or Nubian pages), richly dressed in Oriental attire: plumed turbans, fitted cuirasses, draped short tunics, and buskins. Each figure adopts a slight contrapposto stance, raising a cornucopia-shaped torchiere (serving as a candle cup or sconce) in one hand and supporting a small shallow dish in the other. The execution relies on sculptural work (carved wood or stuccoed composition) covered with rich polychromy contrasting with significant gilded and silvered highlights applied to the clothing and bases. This suite is rooted in the strict tradition of Venetian decorative statuary. Since the 17th century, the 'Moretto' figure has been a great classic of the palaces of the Serenissima, symbolizing the wealth of Venice's trade with the East. In the mid-20th century, this iconographic repertoire experienced a massive resurgence of interest driven by the Hollywood Regency movement. Good overall condition with authentic patina of use.
