DESCRIPTION DU PRODUIT

A rare and precious shop sign in acid-etched glass on a metal backing, originating from a London tobacconist of the late Victorian era. The engraved glass, of impeccable craftsmanship, displays the inscriptions and ornamental motifs typical of English commercial signage of the Belle Époque — refined lettering, decorative flourishes, and the visual identity of the trading establishment. The technique of acid-etching glass, which reached its apogee between 1870 and 1910, produced effects of remarkable fineness and legibility, at once decorative and functional.

In the London of the late nineteenth century, engraved glass shop signs represented the pinnacle of commercial communication. The great pub frontages, pharmacies, and tobacconists competed in elegance with their shopfronts, employing the finest glass craftsmen. The tobacco trade, then in full expansion following the popularisation of cigarettes — driven by such brands as Player's, W.D. & H.O. Wills, and Carreras — dressed its shopfronts in luxurious glass signs reflecting the prestige of a fashionable product.

A rare object at the intersection of commercial history, glassworking craft, and social history, this sign constitutes an exceptional collector's piece. Its state of preservation and the quality of its engraving make it a unique testament to a vanished artisanal tradition. It will find its natural place in a collector's interior, a bar, a library, or a high-end commercial space, bringing a note of history and singular originality to any décor.
