Three-Tier Shelf in Pitch Pine with Turned Columns and Finials, 1900s

The three rectangular tiers in solid pitch pine, with softened corners, are tiered on small columns vigorously turned into balusters, rings and beads, whose rhythm tapers towards the top. The four upper corners are crowned with decorative finials turned in pear-and-flame form, and the piece rests on small flattened feet. The flamed grain of the pitch pine, blond and russet, animates every surface. This type of free-standing shelf, also called a "fancy piece", enjoyed great vogue under the Second Empire: pitch pine, imported from North America, appealed for its decorative grain, and mechanical turning allowed these spirited columns and finials, so typical of Napoléon III period furniture. Condition report: Good overall condition. Pitch pine with a fine honey patina, superficial marks and wear of use on the tiers, structure sound. A practical and charming shelf, for displaying books and objects in a study, a kitchen or a family-home-style bedroom.
