Lucite and Gilded Brass Floor Lamp

This floor lamp, in Lucite and gilded brass, is an outstanding example of the luxury decorative design sensibility that flourished in France at the beginning of the 1970s — a moment at which the extraordinary material freedom of the period produced some of the most inventive and sophisticated lighting of the twentieth century. The combination of transparent Lucite, with its capacity to transmit and refract light in unexpected ways, and the warm opulence of gilded brass creates an object of genuine presence and visual complexity.

Lucite — a trade name for clear acrylic glass — was embraced with particular enthusiasm by French designers and luxury makers during this period. Its transparency gave lamps and furniture an almost dematerialised quality, as though the object existed at the boundary between solid and void. In a floor lamp, this effect is particularly telling: in use, the Lucite shaft channels and distributes light along its length, while the gilded brass mounts provide anchoring warmth and structure. The result is a lamp that is both a practical light source and a decorative sculpture of some power.
