Japan's craft tradition has long recognised the lamp as an object of particular aesthetic significance, from the lanterns of the Edo period to the luminous paper shades of the mingei movement and beyond. In the 1970s, as Japanese design exerted an increasing influence on Western taste, a generation of craftsmen produced lighting that drew on the deep Japanese tradition of working with natural fibres — rope, hemp, and rush — while addressing the export market's appetite for objects combining the organic and the architectural. The braided rope floor lamp emerged as a distinctive expression of this dual sensibility: rooted in Japanese craft culture, yet fully legible to the international decorating market of the period.
