DESCRIPTION DU PRODUIT

The Art Déco movement in France elevated wrought ironwork — ferronnerie d'art — to one of its highest expressions. Inspired by the bold geometries of the style and the renewed prestige of handcrafted metal objects, French ironmasters of the 1920s and 1930s produced lighting and furniture of exceptional quality, combining the strength and malleability of iron with rich surface treatments including gilding. The gilded iron tradition, long associated with the royal and imperial workshops of Versailles and the Empire, was reinterpreted by Art Déco craftsmen with a new formal vocabulary: sunburst motifs, stylised foliage, geometric latticework, and graceful curves of plant forms translated into forged metal.

The present floor lamp is an accomplished example of this heritage. Standing at a height of 160 cm, with a base measuring 46 cm by 41 cm, it combines wrought and gilt iron in a composition that speaks to the technical virtuosity and aesthetic ambition of French Art Déco metalwork. The contrast between the dark, worked iron and the warm luminosity of the gilded passages creates a dialogue of textures and surfaces characteristic of the finest pieces of the period. The overall form, at once architectural and organic, reflects the dual nature of Art Déco itself: the impulse toward order and decoration held in productive tension.

Dating from circa 1940, this floor lamp represents the late flowering of the Art Déco tradition, a moment when its formal language had achieved a degree of refinement and restraint that distinguishes the finest works of the period from the merely fashionable. It would bring a note of authentic French interwar luxury to a period interior, a collector's salon, or any space in which the quality of handcrafted objects is valued in its own right.
