Founded in Paris in 1880 by the Dutch-born entrepreneur Jean-Henri Jansen, Maison Jansen became the most celebrated decorating house of the twentieth century, numbering among its clients the Duchess of Windsor, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the Shah of Iran, and innumerable European houses of nobility. Renowned above all for its rigorous historicism and unmatched command of period styles — from the Louis XVI manner and the Empire to the chinoiserie and the neoclassical — Jansen brought to its productions a scholarly precision and a quality of execution that distinguished its work absolutely from the merely fashionable.
