DESCRIPTION DU PRODUIT
In the decorative arts of postwar France, the combination of black lacquered metal and polished brass expressed a new aesthetic sensibility that was deeply modern yet not indifferent to tradition. The great decorators of the period — Jacques Adnet, Jean Royère, and their contemporaries — exploited the contrast of these two materials with particular sophistication, producing pieces in which the austerity of lacquer and the warmth of brass were understood as complementary rather than opposed. The floor lamp, one of the most ubiquitous objects of the decorated interior, became a privileged vehicle for this investigation: its vertical form and visible material surface making it an ideal field for the expression of precisely calibrated material relationships.
The present example is a fine specimen of this tradition. Constructed from black lacquered metal with brass fittings, it stands at a height of 167 cm above a generous square base measuring 55 cm to each side — proportions that give it a grounded authority without heaviness. The relationship between the two materials is handled with the restraint that distinguishes the best French work of the period from the merely competent: nothing is excessive, nothing is lacking, and the overall effect is one of quiet, assured elegance.
Dating from circa 1950, this floor lamp belongs to the founding moment of what we now recognise as the French Mid-Century Modern tradition — a tradition that drew equally on the refined craft legacy of preceding centuries and the forward-looking ambitions of a generation that had survived the disruptions of the war years to embrace a new idea of the interior. It would be entirely at home alongside pieces by the decorators of this period, or as a distinguished accent in a contemporary space of any character.
