DESCRIPTION DU PRODUIT

Among the more sophisticated material pairings in French decorative arts of the 1960s and 1970s, gun metal and brass represents a tradition of considerable depth. The gun metal finish — the patine canon de fusil, achieved through the controlled oxidation of a metal surface to produce a deep, smoky blue-black — was already established in French metalworking of the nineteenth century, appearing on the finest bronzes of the Restoration and Second Empire. Reappointed by craftsmen of the Mid-Century Modern era, it acquired a new lease of life as an alternative to chrome and lacquer: warmer than the former, more industrial in its associations than the latter, and productive of a surface that seems to contain depth rather than merely reflect light.

The present floor lamp exploits these qualities to considerable effect. Its slender profile — measuring just 16 cm in depth against a width of 40 cm — gives it a distinctly flat, blade-like silhouette that allows it to occupy wall positions or narrow spaces with unusual ease. At a height of 185 cm, it achieves a commanding verticality, the gun metal and brass surfaces playing against each other in a material dialogue of measured sophistication. The overall composition speaks to the best French Mid-Century Modern practice: a formal clarity that is never cold, and a material richness that is never excessive.

A floor lamp of this elegance and presence is equally suited to a period interior of the 1970s and a contemporary space in which the quality of craft objects is treated with the seriousness it deserves. Its notably shallow depth makes it particularly practical for rooms where floor space is at a premium, without any sacrifice of visual authority.
