Large Louis XV Style Marble & Bronze Table Lamp, French Work, 19th Century

This imposing lamp is a distinguished example of the French neo-Rococo taste that flourished throughout the nineteenth century. The body, executed in veined marble, serves as a sumptuous ground for an elaborate programme of chased and gilt bronze mounts: a foliate crown encircles the base, while the prominent handles — formed from paired shells and cascading acanthus leaves, two of the defining emblems of the Louis XV idiom — sweep outward with sculptural confidence. The composition is completed by a crowning floral finial that returns the eye upward, giving the lamp the dynamic, asymmetrically charged energy that distinguishes genuine Rococo revival work from more timid interpretations.

The Louis XV style, first elaborated in the workshops of Parisian bronziers and ébénistes of the 1720s–1750s under the patronage of the king and his court, had its canonical formulation in the oeuvre of Nicolas Pineau, Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier, and the great marchands-merciers who orchestrated the combination of lacquer, porcelain, and ormolu that defined the high Rococo interior. The nineteenth century saw two great revivals of this vocabulary: the first under the Restoration and July Monarchy (1815–1848), when collectors assembled rooms in the goût Louis XV; the second, more opulent wave under the Second Empire, when workshops such as Beurdeley, Dasson, and Maison Millet executed copies and adaptations of the greatest eighteenth-century pieces. A lamp of this scale and ambition belongs squarely within that tradition.

At 77 centimetres tall and with a generous footprint of 55 by 55 centimetres, this lamp commands space with the authority of a collector’s piece. Its marble-and-bronze vocabulary places it in direct dialogue with the most distinguished Parisian interiors of the Belle Époque, and it translates just as naturally into a contemporary setting seeking gravitas and historical depth.
