Adrien Audoux (1900–1980) and Frida Minet (1914–1999) were the great poets of natural fibre in twentieth-century French design. Meeting in Paris in the 1930s, they developed over the following decades a body of work — furniture, lamps, and decorative objects in rope, rattan, and braided natural cord — that stood apart from both the dominant tubular metal aesthetic of Modernism and the heavy historicism of period reproduction. Working from their Parisian atelier, they supplied some of the most distinguished interior decorators of postwar France: their pieces appeared in the work of Jean Royère and Henri Samuel, and were exported internationally as emblematic objects of the French craft sensibility. The delicate, organic, handmade quality of their production proved enduringly influential, prefiguring the natural materials movements of the 1970s and the slow-living aesthetic of the contemporary interior.
