DESCRIPTION DU PRODUIT

The body of this lamp is formed from marble, its surface enriched with inlaid elements in contrasting coloured marbles — a technique that draws on the grand tradition of pietre dure and pietra commessa that distinguished the most refined Italian and French lapidary arts from the Renaissance onwards. At sixty-five centimetres tall on a base of twenty-seven centimetres, the lamp has the proportions of a classical column, and it is in this architectural register that it operates most powerfully: the cool permanence of the marble, the quiet luxury of the polychrome incrustations, and the solidity of the material forming a counterpoint to the ephemeral quality of the light it produces.

The use of marble in the decorative arts has an unbroken history stretching from antiquity through the great Renaissance workshops of Florence to the present day, and the lamp as a vehicle for the lapidary arts is a form with distinguished antecedents. The French luxury decorating milieu of the 1970s, reacting against the synthetics and plastics of the preceding decade, embraced natural stone with enthusiasm: marble tables, stone-clad consoles and marble objets d’art became prominent features of the Parisian decorator’s repertoire. The marble lamp, with its associations of architectural permanence and classical luxury, was a natural expression of this tendency — an object that brought the gravitas of stone to the most intimate act of illumination.

Standing sixty-five centimetres tall, this lamp is perfectly scaled for a console table, generous desk or side table in a principal reception room. The polychrome marble will harmonise with any interior that includes natural stone — floors, fireplace surrounds, table tops — while its sculptural solidity provides an anchor in any composition. In an era when natural materials have returned definitively to favour, a marble lamp of this quality and decorative ambition is a serious and enduring acquisition.
