Travertine — the warm, porous limestone quarried in central Italy and extensively used in ancient Roman architecture — enjoyed a remarkable renaissance in the decorative arts of the late 1960s and 1970s. Seduced by its honeyed veining and the raw, geological quality of its surface, French designers and makers of the période began integrating slabs and columns of travertine into lamps, coffee tables, and console bases, contrasting the stone’s earthy warmth against polished gilt metal to striking effect. This table lamp, of fine French craftsmanship, exemplifies that sensibility with clarity and confidence.

The lamp takes the form of a tall cylindrical column in solid travertine, the natural fossils and voids of the stone left in deliberate evidence — a surface at once mineral and tactile.
