DESCRIPTION DU PRODUIT

This imposing table lamp, combining black lacquered wood with gilt decoration and inlaid nacre, draws on one of the most distinguished cross-cultural traditions in European applied arts: the influence of East Asian lacquerwork on French decorative production. The combination of deep black lacquer, burnished gold and the iridescent shimmer of mother-of-pearl is rooted in the chinoiserie and japonisme traditions that shaped French luxury decoration from the seventeenth century onward, finding renewed and confident expression in the refined interior furnishings of the 1970s. Standing at 83.5 centimetres in height, the lamp commands the room with the presence of a significant decorative object.

The lacquer arts arrived in France in the seventeenth century through the trade networks of the East India Companies, and French craftsmen rapidly developed their own techniques — vernis Martin and other lacquer-inspired finishes — to apply similar effects to European forms. By the twentieth century this tradition had been absorbed fully into the mainstream of French decorative arts: black lacquer became a recurring element of Art Déco interiors, appearing in the work of Eileen Gray, Jean Dunand and Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, and persisting through the post-war decades as a mark of continental sophistication. The addition of nacre inlay lends this lamp a further layer of decorative richness, elevating it beyond the merely functional into the realm of the collector’s object.

In good overall condition, the lamp presents with its lacquered, gilt and nacre decoration intact. Its generous scale — 83.5 centimetres in height over a footprint of 50 by 33.5 centimetres — makes it a natural centrepiece for a salon, library or entrance hall of distinction. A richly decorative and technically refined piece, drawing on centuries of cross-cultural exchange in the French luxury arts.
