Tall Black Lacquered Wood, Gilt and Nacre Table Lamp, French Work, circa 1970

This imposing table lamp, combining black lacquered wood with gilt decoration and inlaid nacre, draws on one of the most distinguished cross-cultural traditions in European applied arts: the influence of East Asian lacquerwork on French decorative production. The combination of deep black lacquer, burnished gold and the iridescent shimmer of mother-of-pearl is rooted in the chinoiserie and japonisme traditions that shaped French luxury decoration from the seventeenth century onward, finding renewed and confident expression in the refined interior furnishings of the 1970s.
