DESCRIPTION DU PRODUIT
This baluster table lamp in polished brass, executed in the Neoclassical style, belongs to a tradition of historically referenced decorative lamp production that found renewed expression in France during the 1970s. The baluster form — derived from the architectural baluster of the Italian Renaissance, the turned column with its characteristic swelling and narrowing profile — had been one of the most enduring shapes in European decorative arts since the seventeenth century. Here it is rendered in warm, polished brass with the confidence of a maker fully at ease with the classical vocabulary, producing a lamp of quiet authority and formal elegance.
The 1970s in France witnessed a significant return to classical and historical references in interior design, as a reaction in part to the austerity of High Modernism and the excesses of the Pop Art decade. Designers, decorators and manufacturers revisited the vocabularies of Louis XVI, Empire and Directoire France, producing furnishings and lighting that drew on the balanced proportions and restrained ornament of the Neo-classical tradition. Brass was the material of choice for such productions, its warm golden character lending itself naturally to the humanist warmth of the classical interior. The result was a refined and commercially successful revival that exerted influence on French decorative production well into the 1980s.
In good overall condition, the lamp retains its brass body with a well-matched acquired patina. Its generous proportions — 68 centimetres in height over a square footprint of 45 by 45 centimetres — give it a commanding but not overwhelming presence, suited to a console, sideboard or mantelpiece in a room of classical character. A distinguished and enduringly elegant lamp in the great French tradition.
