DESCRIPTION DU PRODUIT
This elegant table lamp, pairing red glass with polished brass, is a distinguished example of French decorative lamp production of the late 1950s and early 1960s. The red glass — whether hand-blown or moulded in a deep ruby or brilliant rouge — creates an effect of remarkable theatrical warmth when illuminated, its luminous tones transforming the quality of light in any room. The brass fittings, worked with the precision characteristic of French metal craft of the period, provide a structural framework that complements the warm brilliance of the glass without competing with it, the gold of the metal harmonising naturally with the warm red of the glass.
The combination of coloured glass and brass in French decorative lamp production of the mid-twentieth century drew on several centuries of tradition in the luxury arts. From the crystal and bronze chandeliers of the Belle Époque to the coloured glass lamps of the Art Déco period, French makers had consistently demonstrated their understanding of coloured glass as a light-transmitting and light-transforming material. Red in particular held a special place in this tradition: from the ruby glass of Bohemian and Venetian makers to the deep red shades of Gallé and the Art Nouveau workshops, red glass was understood as a material of singular atmospheric power, evoking intimacy, warmth and the luxury of an interior closed from the world.
In good overall condition, the lamp retains its red glass and brass elements with appropriate patina. Its generous scale — 69 centimetres in height — gives it a confident presence well suited to a console, sideboard or reception room where the quality of its illumination can be fully appreciated. A beautiful and atmospheric piece, at once a decorative object and a source of genuinely exceptional light.
