DESCRIPTION DU PRODUIT

Each sconce features a backplate in carved and giltwood depicting a dolphin with finely chased scales, its tail raised in a foliate plume, dominating a powerful grimacing mascaron surrounded by acanthus scrolls and shells. Two light arms in acanthus volutes spring from the composition, ending in candle cups with gadrooned collars receiving black faux candles.

This fantastical repertoire — dolphins, mascarons, fleshy acanthus — is directly inherited from the Régence style and the ornamental design of the early 18th century; this pair constitutes a 19th-century carved interpretation of it, testifying to the virtuosity of the giltwood-carving ateliers of the period.

Condition report: Good general condition. Old gilding patinated with occasional wear revealing the gesso, carving crisp and well preserved. Wiring to be checked before use. A pair full of character, to frame a mirror, an overmantel or a fireplace.
