Pair of Neoclassical Three-Light Sconces in Patinated Bronze with Round Backplate, Circa 1950

Each sconce is organised around a round wall backplate in patinated bronze, chased with radiating gadroons and decorative friezes, from which spring three twisted light arms adorned with sheathing acanthus leaves. The arms end in moulded cups and nozzles intended to receive faux candles, composing a balanced fan of light.

The vocabulary of gadroons, twists and acanthus leaves belongs to the Neoclassical repertoire, here interpreted by French bronze-makers of the 1950s in a dark silvered patina with pewter highlights that lends the pair a sober and refined presence, less expected than traditional gilding.

Condition report: Good overall condition. Bronze with an even dark patina, crisp chasing, candle holders in place. Electricity checked by an electrician. An elegant pair to frame a mirror, a fireplace or to enliven the walls of a hallway.
