Pair of Two-Light Sconces in Polychrome Carved Wood with Arrow and Fletching Decoration, Louis XVI Style, Italian Work, Circa 19

Each sconce is carved in the form of a vertical arrow, the finely striated fletching deployed at the top and the tapered point at the bottom, in polychrome wood with muted brown and red tones. A central gilded medallion, girdled by a twisted tie, receives two scrolled metal arms of light ending in patinated wood candle-cups and faux candles.

The motif of the quiver and arrow belongs to the Neoclassical repertoire of the Louis XVI style, which the Italian workshops of the turn of the century reinterpreted with the decorative verve and polychromy that are their own. These carved wood sconces illustrate this taste for graceful and light ornament.

Condition report: Good general condition. Original polychromy and gilding with a fine antique patina, with small wear from time consistent with age. Electricity checked by an electrician. A pair full of charm, on either side of a mirror or a mantelpiece.
