A brilliant small-scale example of the French mid-century tradition of pairing hand-painted ceramic tile tops with slender iron bases, this side table commands attention far beyond its modest dimensions. The rectangular top is composed of hand-made ceramic tiles painted in an explosive abstract composition: large irregular rectangles of molten orange, vermillion red, and flame yellow are interspersed with deeply saturated blocks of dark teal and forest green, the tiles themselves bearing the spontaneous, textured brushwork of the ceramicist’s hand rather than the mechanical uniformity of industrial production.
