Pair of Three-Tier Neoclassical Brass & Smoked Glass Side Tables, in the Style of Baguès, c.1940

This elegant pair of three-tier side tables captures the spirit of the great Parisian maisons of the neoclassical period, combining the warmth of polished brass with deeply tinted smoked glass in a form that is at once architectural and intimate. The attribution to the style of Maison Baguès — the celebrated bronze and lighting house founded by Alfred Baguès on the Boulevard Haussmann — is supported by the signature details visible throughout: the reeded column legs rising from a square brass connecting block, and above all the distinctive flame finials that crown each leg in the fashion characteristic of that house.

Each table carries three shelves of smoked dark glass, the graduated tiers providing both practical surface area and a strong visual rhythm to the overall composition. The brass framework — column legs with ring mounts at regular intervals, the geometric connecting stretchers, the precise articulation of each tier — speaks to a workshop of considerable technical accomplishment, fully capable of the refined casting and metalwork for which the leading Parisian ateliers of the period were celebrated.

At 37.5 centimetres wide, 38 centimetres deep and 70 centimetres in height, the tables are well proportioned for use beside a sofa or armchair, offering three surfaces at varying heights for display or practical use. Sold as a matching pair, they form a striking composed ensemble when placed at either end of a seating group.

In very good vintage condition throughout, the brass showing an attractive warm patina, the smoked glass panels intact. A distinguished and decorative pair in the grand neoclassical tradition of French decorative arts.
