DESCRIPTION DU PRODUIT

This Louis XVI style fireplace bellows represents a high point of the French decorative metalworker’s art as applied to domestic fireplace accessories. The body, of characteristic pointed oval form, is constructed around two brass plaques worked in repousse — the technique of hammering metal from the reverse to create a raised design in relief on the face. The central decoration depicts a female figure in a pastoral setting, rendered with considerable narrative detail in the manner of the Louis XVI period: the flowing drapery, the graceful pose and the suggestion of surrounding foliage speak to the refined decorative sensibility of late eighteenth century France.

The bellows function through a leather membrane sandwiched between the two brass plaques, compressed by the handle and expanded by the pointed nozzle to direct a controlled stream of air into the fire. The characteristic form — narrow at both nozzle and handle ends, expanding to a broad oval at the centre — is the classical bellows shape established in the seventeenth century and refined over the following two centuries into the elegant proportions seen here.

Dating to circa 1900, this piece was produced at the height of the Louis XVI revival that characterised French decorative arts during the Belle Époque, when a nostalgia for the refined elegance of the Ancien Régime led craftsmen to reproduce and reinvent the forms and ornaments of the late eighteenth century with remarkable fidelity. The aged brass patina, with its dark oxidised highlights, enhances the depth of the repousse work and gives the piece a distinguished antique character.
