Gilt Metal Chandelier with Reed Spray Decoration, Coco Chanel Style, Circa 1970

This chandelier is organised around a central spray of long gilt reed leaves springing from a gadrooned bowl, from which escape six sinuous light arms dressed with cascading foliage. The star-shaped bobèches receive faux candles, while flower buds on fine stems punctuate the composition with lightness. The gilt tole with a nuanced patina gives the whole a very decorative warmth. This gilt and theatrical naturalism corresponds to the so-called Coco Chanel style, in reference to the couturière's taste for sheaves of wheat and gilt vegetation, taken up by the French and Italian workshops of the 1970s in the spirit of Florentine gilt iron.
