DESCRIPTION DU PRODUIT

A circular rattan mirror in an open-work frame of considerable decorative charm, in which the surrounding ring is constructed from a series of large, overlapping arched loops of rattan cane. Unlike the tightly packed petal or crescent frames of other rattan mirror types, the loops here are generous in scale and openly spaced, creating a frame of airy, almost lace-like quality: the warm brown cane traces its curving arcs against the wall behind, admitting light and shadow through the interstices between each loop. The overall effect is one of lightness and graceful elaboration.

This open-loop construction represents a more complex and labour-intensive approach to rattan mirror-making than the simple spoke or flat-ring alternatives. Each loop must be individually bent from a length of natural cane and secured at the point of overlap with its neighbours — a process that requires both technical skill and a sure decorative eye to maintain the regularity and rhythm of the ring around its full circumference. The natural warm brown of the rattan cane deepens slightly at the binding and junction points, adding visual interest to the frame’s surface.

At 38.5 centimetres in diameter, this is a compact mirror of ideal proportions for a bathroom, bedroom or corridor: large enough to serve a practical purpose, but sufficiently refined in its decoration to function independently as a wall object of decorative interest. The shallow frame depth of 2 cm means the piece sits flat against the wall without projecting obtrusively.

In good condition, with the natural variation of aged rattan throughout. A charming and relatively rare example of the open-work tradition in French rattan mirror-making, distinguished by the openness and elegance of its frame construction.
