Cherrywood Coffee Table with Tapered Legs and Brass Sabots, Modernist, French Work, Attributed to Jacques Adnet, circa 1940

The rectangular top in blond cherrywood, framed by veneer all around, slightly overhangs a delicately curved front apron. The four tapered legs of square section, slightly splayed, end in brass sabots that punctuate the silhouette and underline the finesse of the base.

This elegant sobriety — blond fruitwood, taut lines, brass accents — is characteristic of the work of Jacques Adnet (1900-1984), a major figure of French classic modernism, director of the Compagnie des Arts Français, whose furniture of the 1940s combines rigour and refinement.

Condition report: Good overall condition. Cherrywood with a beautiful blond patina, a few superficial marks of use on the top, brass sabots with an even patina. A discreet and elegant coffee table, which will blend into a classic living room as into a contemporary interior.
