Pair of Wrought Iron Lanterns with Glazed Panels and Twisted Uprights, Neo-Gothic Style, Circa 1900

Each lantern features a quadrangular wrought iron cage enclosing four panels of clear glass, the corner uprights worked in a twist and surmounted by tapered points as finials. The crown opens into a bouquet of facing volutes joined by a crook handle allowing suspension, while the base rests on four small scrolled feet. The fittings and riveted brackets attest to careful forge work.

The points, twists and volutes link this pair to the neo-Gothic style fashionable around 1900, when art ironwork revisited the medieval vocabulary for historicist residences, porches and winter gardens. The slightly coppery brown patina adds to their authenticity.

Condition report: Good overall condition. Iron with a fine old patina, the glass may show likely minor surface scratches; natural oxidation of the metal. A decorative pair to place or hang, to shelter a candle in an entrance, on a summer table or on either side of a fireplace.
