Polished Wrought Iron Curule Stool with Woven Seat and Floret Decoration, French Work, 1960s

The seat, slightly curved for comfort, is woven from wide interlaced iron slats forming an openwork checkerboard of the finest graphic effect. It rests on a curule base composed of facing arches in wrought iron of round section, joined by a central stretcher punctuated with bud florets, which gives rhythm to the composition. The polished metal reveals subtly nuanced steel reflections.

The curule form, inherited from the seats of ancient Rome, runs through the history of furniture and enjoyed a clear revival in French ironwork of the 1960s, which produced pared-down interpretations such as this, between neoclassicism and modernity.

Condition report: Good overall condition. Polished iron with an even grey patina, slight marks of use inherent to the material. A sculptural occasional seat, perfect at the foot of a bed, beneath a console or beside a fireplace.
