DESCRIPTION DU PRODUIT

The Medici vase is one of the most celebrated forms in the history of Western decorative arts. The original — a large marble krater from ancient Rome, acquired by the Medici family in the sixteenth century and now in the Uffizi in Florence — gave rise from the Renaissance onward to an extraordinary progeny of interpretations in every medium: bronze and silver, Sèvres porcelain, Wedgwood jasperware, and the cut crystal of the great French glass houses. Its characteristic silhouette — a wide, rounded bowl, a narrow waist, a spreading base, and handles sweeping from shoulder to neck — is at once architecturally imposing and functionally graceful, naturally suited to flower arrangements, mantelpiece display, or the adornment of consoles.

This pair, in French crystal and dating from around 1900, presents the Medici form at a refined domestic scale: 10.5 cm wide and 19 cm tall, compact enough for a mantelpiece, bookcase, or dessert-table centrepiece, yet sufficiently substantial in profile to read clearly from across a room. The crystal medium — with its exceptional clarity and refractive quality — transforms the form, replacing the gravity of marble with a luminous transparency that catches and multiplies the light of the interior.

Circa 1900 marks the height of the French cut-crystal tradition, when houses such as Baccarat, Saint-Louis, and the Cristallerie de Pantin were producing work of technical and artistic refinement that has not since been surpassed. This pair stands firmly within that tradition.

Sold as a pair, in very good condition consistent with their age. A distinguished pair of classical crystal vases from the French Belle Époque.
